Fostering a love of voluntary work and charity aid
THE team at Essex & Suffolk Water are a caring bunch.
Despite working hard all year round to ensure we all have access to plenty of clean water, the staff are simply brimming with ideas to help the local community.
So much so, that the company launched its Just an Hour scheme back in 2002 – a volunteering programme which allows any team member to have at least 15 paid hours of work time each year to do charitable, community and environmental work.
The scheme was a huge hit – and staff have now clocked up more than 17,000 hours of good work since it began.
School delivers a lesson in environmental excellence
WHEN pupils make their own apple juice and ask for sensor lights in the loos, you know they come from a school that’s totally committed to being green.
There’s a thriving Eco Team at St Mary’s School in Colchester where the girls get to make decisions on how to make the building and grounds as environmentally-friendly as possible.
Under the watchful eye of eco co-ordinator Sarah Wilding, the girls have helped introduce recycling projects, energy-saving devices and green money-making schemes
Greetings from Innovative firm helping children read

They even test out all their products on Liz and Nicky’s four young children.
Write With Sydney produces a range of educational greetings cards designed to help young children learn to read and write.
NOT every college can claim its students sell scarves in a department store or learn their trade in two successful restaurants.
But this is true of Colchester Institute where the focus is firmly on vocational courses which give students practical skills to help them get a job.
The fashion and textile students are living proof of this. The second year students have designed an exclusive range of individual scarves which are sold in Williams & Griffin department store in the town centre.
HAVING just moved to new offices in Brentwood, the staff at FRP Advisory are looking forward to embracing a new chapter in Essex and the Eastern region.
The insolvency specialists are now happily ensconced in Jupiter House in Warley Hill Business Park after a successful move from their old premises in Hornchurch.

Special kind of volunteer puts charity at forefront
“WE TURN people’s lives around.”
Not every company can make such a bold claim, but it’s certainly true of DIAL Basildon and South Essex.
The charity is also unusual in that it has such a wide remit – it offers advice and a helpline to people with any problem related to any disability.
This includes physical and mental disabilities and learning difficulties.
“It takes a special kind of volunteer to work here,” said manager Jan Stevens.
“You have to be really, really committed and prepared to do training.”
There are a handful of paid staff at DIAL but they are kept afloat with 24 dedicated volunteers who work between 3 and 15 hours a week. What is different about DIAL volunteers is that they all have a physical or mental disability themselves, or are a carer for someone with these sorts of conditions.

Winning Provided healthy boost for private hospital
Manager says accolade helped group to record busiest month ever
IT IS a year of celebration for Springfield Hospital.
Not only does Chelmsford’s private hospital mark its 25th anniversary this year, it’s also just had its busiest month ever.
Part of that is thanks to the Essex Business Excellence Awards as the hospital won the Customer Care and Service award last September.
“Winning this award was wonderful news for us,” said general manager David Hewitt. “We had a radio advertising campaign over Christmas where we said we are now an award-winning hospital. People choose to come here and these kinds of accolades really help.
IF YOU’RE serious about getting fit, then you need to call in the muscle.
And there is plenty of that on offer at Essex Boot Camp, which boasts former Royal Marine Commandos and a rugby player among its instructors.
The business got an extra boost last year when it won the Innovation category at the Essex Business Excellence Awards.
“Our profile has shot up massively since we won,” said Glynn. “It was such a privilege because no other boot camp has ever won it before. There are so many boot camps popping up everywhere now but this showed people that we are the best and that we are serious about what we do.”
ENTRIES are beginning to come in for the Essex Business Excellence Awards from all around the county.
We will be featuring some of them in the papers from the end of February through to the middle of May so make sure don't miss out on this free publicity for your business.
